Even though I’m an intuitive eating weight loss coach, I still catch myself falling into my old dieter’s mindset from time to time.
We’re hosting out of town guests this weekend, and yesterday we took them to a local outdoor festival. It turned out to be pretty small and not very extraordinary, but it was something different and certainly better than sitting around in the house. Our options included all of the regular fare...

I keep telling food lies. I’m not trying to lie, but every time I think about telling the truth I get all confused about what’s really true. Examples:
Hot chocolate: I don’t like it. It tastes like fake cocoa flakes floating in water. It’s runny and it smells funny. I’ve tried hot chocolate many times, and I always have the same assessment…except for this one time. One time I liked hot chocolate. ...

I love that you have no idea what this post is going to be about. Neither do I, so this should be fun.
The Bumbo: Last Friday, my daughter was sitting in her Bumbo chair. Feel free to Google it if you’re that curious, but it’s basically a small rubber thingy that she sits in while I’m doing stuff. Anyway, she was sitting in it while I was dumping the water out of her little bathtub.
I was about 15 inches away from her,...

So I got a call today about a possible speaking engagement at a local company (me = excited = happy dance all around my dining room). The lady was giving me all of the details, and I was totally feeling her on everything. This was great news for a rather dull Monday.
As we were wrapping up the call, I promised to follow up with additional pricing details and AV requests, and I asked her if she needed a list of my speaking topics or if she...

I was reading an article on MSN this morning when I noticed this orange banner ad at the top of the page:
***Diets don’t work. Weight Watchers does.***
Really though? I’m utterly confused by this because Weight Watchers is a diet, and I’m offended that they would try to pass themselves off as anything else. I feel like I’m pretty clear on the definition of the word “diet,” but I just checked with the Merriam-Webster...

What does looking like I’m on a diet look like anyway? That’s what I’d like to know.
On Sunday afternoon, Scott and I took our little girl, Nina, on a walk. We brought some cherries and strawberries, but they were gone before we even reached the trail. By the time we did our little family walk and got back to the car, we were all starving.
Luckily for Nina, her favorite meal (Mommy’s milk!) is never far away, but Scott...

Normal eating is going to the table hungry and eating until you are satisfied. It is being able to choose food you like and eat it and truly get enough of it—not just stop eating because you think you should.
Normal eating is being able to give some thought to your food selection so you get nutritious food, but not being so wary and restrictive that you miss out on enjoyable food.
Normal eating is giving yourself permission to eat sometimes because...

Does it Work?
from “Memoirs of a Sometimes Mad Masseuse” by Jess Rivers
Unlike the vast majority of my woman clients
Who wordlessly, apologetically, disrobe
As thought I would turn on my heel and leave
At sight of their real or imagined imperfections
She flings off her coverings
As if she’s waited all her life
For this moment to arrive and expects
Nothing less than my absolute appreciation
Of her beauty.
She gets it.
The beauty, though, is this:
Although...

Mindless Eating
Mindful eating brings the principles of mindfulness to our often rushed and automatic mealtimes. Dr. Jan Chozen Bays defines mindfulness as, “…deliberately paying attention, being fully aware of what is happening both inside and outside yourself – in your body, heart and mind – and outside yourself, in your environment. Mindfulness is awareness without criticism or judgement.”
I love that last part...

The other day, I was on Skype with one of my best girlfriends. It’s hard to gauge moods via the web, but I could tell by her responses that she was feeling down and definitely not having a good day. When I asked her what was on her mind, she responded with this note: “I’m just really frustrated because I HATE my size. I’m tired of being big, and I want to lose weight. But I want to eat whatever I want and I don’t want to exercise. ...
